Welcome to Connection 8
This is our eighth roundup of trends, ideas and stories from the world of radio. It seems the world
of technology – particularly in communications – has changed dramatically in those short years.
Looking back, we can track how technology has driven changes in the way people work, how safe
the public is, how businesses grow and prosper.
Philip Mullins’ article, Beyond Monitor and Control, tells us that the next chapter in the story is likely
to involve more sophisticated ways to use the huge volumes of data that are now routinely collected.
At the same time, Dr Jan Noordhof warns of the ever-present cyber security threat, and the
dangerous assumptions that organizations make, in thinking that their systems are safe. Nothing,
it seems, is truly secure.
The impact of technology is at the heart of our cover feature too, where we look at workplace health
and safety. Is Zero Harm achievable, and what is the role of technology in achieving it? While for
Governments, regulators, employers and employees this is a global hot potato, here in New Zealand,
our unenviable workplace safety record means there is plenty of work to do on our own doorstep.
In workplaces large and small, radio has a significant role to play.
And of course, we have our usual eclectic mix of people, opinions, ideas and technical know-how
that we hope will appeal to everyone out there in our radio community.
