Welcome to Connection 5
At Connection, we are proud of the broad reach we have achieved in two years. Our regular
readership of people with an interest in critical communications spans every continent and
more than 70 countries.
While the way we live and work may vary widely, the spiralling increases in energy demands
on our small planet will impact us all, in multiple ways, within a few short years. This issue’s
lead article takes a broader approach than usual, showing just how fragile our energy future is,
and how devastating loss of supply can be, to public safety, crime statistics, food security and
transport. To manage these risks, critical communications provide a key element in the strategy
of utilities and public safety agencies around the world.
We have our usual varied round up of news, views and ideas of interest to anyone involved in
critical communications. Regular contributor Ian Graham lifts the lid on PSK and FSK modulation
schemes; two Radio Club of America board members tell us why - and how - the club remains
relevant to the industry today; and we hear from a DMR network operator who faced a severe
weather event, just days after their DMR network was commissioned.
As always, we seek your involvement, whether it is comment, criticism, an idea you’d like explored
or to submit an article.
